Open a familiar book by chance and let one passage answer from an unexpected angle.
What you’ll need
- A book with substantial text
- A strip of paper
- A pencil
The ritual
- Write a question on the paper and place it beneath the closed book.
- Close your eyes, open the book at random, and place one finger gently on the page.
- Read the full sentence beneath your finger and the sentence immediately after it.
- Copy the phrase that catches your attention. Write how it changes, sharpens, or complicates your question.
